Overflow plumbing question

Have 210g with dual overflows. (2 towers inside back of tank). Bottom drilled. (2 holes)
Both drains are plumbed to flow to one side of aquarium (that's where the sump filter "inlet" is)
Have ball valves on the plumbing to try to control flow and NOISE. I am still getting the toilet noise from the plumbing !!! Sometimes I get is dialed in correctly and it is nice and quiet but as soon as I do a water change,,,, it starts all over.

I have ordered PVC gate valves to replumb the drains.
I need suggestions and photos if possible on how this should be plumbed to get it to be QUIET !! When it is dialed in it is awesome, but I do not believe that it should be this complicated. I feel that I'm missing something.
I have durso style standpipes
Location of gate valves ?? Closer to bottom of aquarium or near end of drain ? Air tubing in standpipe ? I'm not sure what to do

Hello Robert. welcome to forum!

I used to run a sump for a couple of years and what I did to stop noise was take the stand pipe off inside the overflows. I then used a PVC Gate valve!



They can be precisely dialed in so that you don't have to deal with toilet bowl gurgling, by matching the flow of the return pump perfectly. Don't worry about an emergency overflow as well as the larger drain pipes systems will not clog. A dead Cyphotilapia would have to be in there to clog a 1.5 return line. And Drill holes in the return pipes just above the water line to break siphon if you lose power.

I have since switched to larger canister filters plumbed into my tanks with overflows. here is a video if you decide to do get away from the Sump idea. You can add additional parallel lines on the output line of a decent sized canister filter for extra reactor type setups (i.e. carbon bags, purigen, matrix, etc...).

Hey Mastiffman, I was hoping I'd hear from you. You've always given very knowledgeable advice so far !

I'm hoping that the new gate valves help me out. I didn't even think about just taking the standpipes out of the towers.
It's something I'll have to try out as soon as I get my new parts in !!!

I like your setup but I don't think I'm quite ready to go to canisters and give up my sump ............ yet. lol

I also started using some Red Sea ocean Clear Canisters that have 30-40sq ft cartridges in them. I stuff a bag of matrix in the middle of them as well as either a bag of well rinsed carbon or purigen. The water is crystal clear and the tank is dead silent! which I love! one of them I have a Jebao DC 600 external DC Pump. Which is also near dead silent and high Quality. It only uses 42 watts and pumps almost 100gph at 5ft of head.

I'll have to get a video up of that too soon.

I'm thinking of doing basically what you said and/or a Herbie style of system.

What about having a main drain in one tower, and an emergency drain in the second tower. Split the return and have one in each tower ?

Is it foolish to have a 210g tank drain in only one tower ?
I "currnetly" have a Durso standpipe in each tower.

yeah, I would get as much flow going as possible. And I have never heard of anyone's overflow drain getting clogged up. It would have to be not maintained for years for this to happen in my opinion and I'm not really a risk taker all...

you could put a shorter standpipe, only 5-6" tall and a gate valve still and this would avoid anything (even though I highly doubt it would happen) from getting into the actual standpipe. The whole point of the other herbie style and bean animal is stop the gurgling sound. which it still doesn't. A PVC twisting gate valve completely alleviates the gurgling sound as it allows the drain flow to match the output flow.

I would deff use both overflows. I think that en emergency overflow is redundant and not worth the time or effort. But that's me.

I ordered the gate valves and will be replacing the ball valves. The fine tuning will be nice ! (actually ordered the wrong size the first time. Correct ones are on the way.)

What would you think of two durso standpipes and two return lines ? Would the dursos be quiet once dialed in better or just use two short standpipes ?
It wouldn't take much to try both but didn't know if it had already been tried and could save myself some time.

I honestly think that it won't even matter. Once you get the gate valves dialed in, it will be dead silent. The only noise that you will be worrying about is your return pump.

Which leads me to my next question. What kind of pump are you using? Internal or external and what brand and model?

Because of a previous conversation with you I ordered and am using a Jebao DC9000 (internal)
loving it so far. It just has a small hum when it's cranked up. Just trying to get everything else quieter with the high flow

Yep. Pump sound when used internally is always amplified. Try placing it on top of a soft but thick kitchen sponge in the sump... That should help deaden it. Or hang it from the bottom of the cabinet with airline from a screw so that it hovers just above the bottom of the sump.

If it's to high of flow, you can press the Minus button (left one) and slow down the flow a little to decrease the surface agitation. Or aim the outputs down a little more into the water. it will still keep the dissolved O2 in the water at an ample level but reduce the "splashing" sound.
