Hey Gang,
So this has been a long time in the making and will continue to be so for a long time if I'm capable.
I have 8 wild Maswa with a ration of 1m/7fm... They are doing well and breeding regularly. I have since begun to select fry from a few of the females to keep, raise up and select to go into a breeding program. I also have another group of F1 that consists of 2m/4 females. All 7 are from completely unrelated wild bloodlines. 6 are from one group and 1 female is from another group.
This is the latest and current video of the F1 from my small colony that I'm raising... They are show good potential. Between the two groups I will swap the males that I think will contribute the best to the program and I will only strip females that do the same. These fry will be raised separately from any others and chosen from to contribute to the wild colony that I have now. Females only will be added at this time. Once I'm able to acquire a few really nice wild males, I will start outcrossing the lines as well to keep the gene pool as big and as pure as possible. These actions of outcrossing (breeding to completely unrelated specimens of equal or greater quality) will be exactly what takes place in Lake Tanganyika. BUT with the added assistance of selection from the best specimens and not just any that are ready as they do in the lake (hence the large range of variation).
IF, just IF I can acquire those new nice males before the first generation offspring of the two unrelated F1 groups created, reach breeding size, I will start directly with them, instead of adding those back to my existing 8 and do away with the original wild alpha from my current wild group.
IF, just IF I can acquire a handful of nice males, I will use one male in each of the F1 groups as well to further increase genetic diversity.
This process will be a long term project for me. I will not give up, within all that I can possibly do, until I achieve GDHQ (Genetically Diverse High Quality) offspring. This will also take experiments of outcrossing groups to unrelated males to ensure consistency of genetic traits. Which I'm sure will be high but it will give me a good idea do the percentage of GDHQ fry that are being produced with each generation of outcrossing.
The other group of F1 from unrelated bloodlines are in the 60g tank in this video at the 3min mark.
