G'day ZeeZee...i have never done it personally but Riftwater has successfully kept trets with his trophs...in a 125gal I believe. You gonna take the plunge?

Hey there ZeeZee.

Yes I believe so. I have fry growing out with some Tropheus fry and they are doing great!

Unfortunately I lost that entire big batch due to moving their rack of tanks. But the pair have spawned again and I'm going to try and get these in a good tank to raise a bunch out to get to people.

So here are some of the first batch of fry from this wild pair that I decided to keep. They are looking good. Im not 100% but my hunch is that the males are stripped and females are stripped but almost completely faded out at this stage. But evenly.

Andrew these are so cool! How big do they get at maturity & can you keep them with other shell or sand dwellers without problems?

My wild male is at least 6" and the female is about 5" and I would think that as long as they are grown from fry with sub-adult shellies as they are normally small and the shellies have plenty of shells and the tank is big enough, they would be fine. BUT, they are carnivores/ Molluscivore (snail eaters). And as with any carnivorous and aggressive fish, caution should be taken around other fish. They'd be better with something a bit more to their level of size and aggression. I have mine in with my Wild Moshi Colony and they do well. I had them with my Ikola before and they did well also. I just needed to put them in a bigger tank.

But now that they've finally paired off, they may do well in their own tank or in a smaller tank. They are pretty easy going so far as fry. Not much aggression at all.

Thanks for explaining Andrew. I've never seen these & I love the look of them. I asked because I'm in the beginning stages of converting my 125 mixed lake cichlid tank over to a Tang only tank and have been researching stocking compatibility in fish that I'm interested in keeping.  I'm fairly certain about what I'd like to have mid-column and rock dwelling but can't decide if I want shellies, sand dwellers, a combo of both (not sure that can be done ) so I'm a little stuck & still researching this area. I really think these are beauties & thank you for the info on them!
