My two Maswa colonies

Hey folks,

Haven't been on here for a while. Want to post vids of my two colonies.

This is the 150Gal tank in the living room. 18 adults. The 3 younger ones, with wider bar, are about 1.5 year-old, and are offsprings from the 90gal below. This one runs on a DIY 40gal wet/dry system and a Filstar XP3.


This one is 90gal in the garage. This colony breeds regularly. Something happened to the last batch that turned all the juveniles black and appears they lose their sight. Key keep scouring the bottom as if the light is out. The only thing I can remember is there was a cold spell one day and I forgot to hook up the heater (was summer turning into fall season). The smallest fry group about 25 in one of the container are doing great. the larger fry in the other container are starting to show bars.

I have two canisters on this one, a Filstar XP3 and a Fluval FX6 to keep them happy.

Wow. Been through a lot with these. Might suggest a tank to grow the fry out in. Strip them and put them in a tank of their own next to the main tank with good filtration.

What is your water change schedule?

Once a week Andrew. About 20% to 25%. I have two canisters (an XP3 and an FX6) so I am not too worry about filtration. I found a local hobbyist I can off load most of the fry and only keep about half dozen to grow out the colony. Plan to get a bigger tank, just need to convince the missus... :-)

Gotcha. You just gotta be manly about it. Just have to get the tank and setup. Its a fish tank. Whats she gonna do divorce over a fish tank? Lol

Too much feminism these days. Women demasculinizing men with "womans rights". Has nothing to do with respect for your wife. Because that is a two way street. She should respect you enough for you to NOT have to "ask" or "convince" her to "let" you get another tank. Its not like your adding on to the house or building a mancave in the basement. Its a fish tank. Ya know? Sorry. Ive just been hearing this for years from guys and I dont understand it. 😉

Lol I'm with you Drew I always find it easier to just go for the women usually come around to it either way my basement my fish room lol. But I'm also lucky as my wife has actually started really enjoying all the tanks

Ive been that way from day one. It was something that I just did. My wifes loves me and I her so its not a big deal. I keep up in the tanks tok so that might be part of it. But even the couple of times I slacked a little there wasn't any issue. Shes a great woman.

Back to Trophs... :-)

So, some changes lately. I sold my colony in the 150g to a local hobbyist, and picked up 8 WC Front Zaire Chumbu from another hobbyist nearby. He had 14, but I can only keep 8 in my 150. With the DYI wet/dry, they are happy, but I think I may add an FX6 I picked up from craigslist recently.



Still keeping my Maswa colony in the garage. Sold the last batch of fry. Just stripped 18 more from 2 female this last Sunday. The female in the container is there because I thought she had fry, turned out she just spawned, so I put her and the eggs in the container, walked away, came back in about an hour, she scooped them all up. I let her back in the tank...wait for three weeks.
