What type of filtration do you all use?

Hi, I am just about to get started setting up a tank for Tropheus (not sure what size yet) and was wondering what type of filtration do you use, canister, sump, etc.?

I'm not terribly familiar with sumps. I have a 125 and 75 gallon and use canister filters, they are easy to use and quiet.

I have a 3 stage sump with a surface skim overflow. I like the sump but I hate the surface overflow cause it doesn't pick up detrius out of the lower water column or off the substrate.

I'm a big fan of passing water through the media containing the beneficial bacteria relatively slowly to make sure there is good contact time optimizing harmful dissolved waste conversion to harmless. Some of the big canisters have high output which is great for oxygenation and solid waste extraction but not optimal for dissolved waste conversion.

I use a 600 gph pump on my 125 gal which moves about 375-400 gph at the head height of my return. I gravel vac every water change to remove solid waste from my substrate and my fish are always happy ☺

PSEURO, I really haven't decided yet which ones I want. Everything is all in the planning stage right now.

On my 60 I have a Ehiem canister (1217?) And a 110 hangover (with just the sponge) Aquaclear. That works well. On my 100 I have a wet/dry (with oversump) and a 110 Aquaclear as well. Each tank has a Rio water mover.. (I think that's what they're called..Rio?)

juwel corner unit 190 litres.. 25 Tropheus duboisi juveniles. 4 dwarf synodontis petricola juveniles. 1 L144 Blue Eyed Yellow Bristlenose juvenile. yes I know will have to upgrade tank soon ha ha ha... filtration is as follows ..Eheim Electronic Filter Professional 3E 700 2078...built in juwel bio filter... and a Ocean Free Hydra 30 Internal Filter and Depurator.

My main Tropheus tank is a Fluval 190 L Venezia corner tank with integrated t-5 flourescent lighting.

Fish stock:

• 15 - T. duboisi breeding group 
  
•  8 - S. petricola
•  1 - N. lelupei
•  6 - juvenile 5 Bar Trets
  

Filtration: I use Biohome Ultra media + Hydroton in the HOB and canister filters.
 

• Tidal 55 - HOB
• Rena XP 3 - Canister
• Fluval 406  - Canister
• Corner Poret foam filter with 2 Jetlifters & 300 gph Marineland submersible pump
  
• 600 gph Hydor circulation power head

They all seem to be doing well

I am considering adding prefilters to my canister filters with quick releases. Does any one have experience / advice about this? My thinking is:

1. it's pretty inexpensive
2. This will make the canister maintenance easier
3. Provide even more media capacity for the canister filters
