New to Tropheus, central Ohio

Good afternoon,

Newbie from Ohio here. I’ve kept fish (oscars, discus, angels, uaru) off and on for the past 20 years or so. I’ve currently got a 210 setup, primarily housing 4 uaru. Surprisingly, my uaru have been more skittish than any discus or angel I ever had (including wild altums). With some younger kids in the house, looking for something a bit less sensitive and a bit more active.

I’m ready to give Tropheus a try...and this looks like the best spot to learn! Planning on nixing what I’ve got in my current setup to focus on a couple groups of tropheus, maybe some Julidochromis, and a few gobies.

Awesome welcome to the forum there is tons of knowledge and breeding talent here. Tropheus are IMO one of the most entertaining and good looking fish you can keep. as long as you do so correctly. Good luck in building your groups.

Welcome to the forum John! Sounds like Tropheus are right up your alley! I breed and some 2.5" Ikola ready to go. Already starting to show color!

Andrew, I’ve checked out your YouTube videos and your fish look to be awesome. I think at this point I’m leaning towards a colony of the gold Kiriza...but not sure what the other one will be. I’d like something that I don’t want to cross breed for sure. My wife really likes the rainbows—doesn’t seem to matter if they’re the red/purple/blue.

It’d be tough for me to pass on some really high quality golds at this time...but we’ll see where I end up! I’m not in any rush, so I have time to make sure I get things the way I want them (I’m pretty picky about quality as well).

Good luck in your search gold kiriza can be a tough find and pretty expensive too. I paid nearly 30 a fish for mine at 1.5". I believe that a member here used to have a breeding group ogroddi I think is his forum name.

Hey John, happy to be a resource as needed mate. There was a member recently selling fry from an albino chipimbi group. They're very expensive compared to more common variants but they're rare and stunning if you want something bright. Typically species red (chipimbi) and species black (kiriza) wouldn't cross, but with these 2 being albino & mutation morph I'm not sure...
