I had some spare Red Sea Ocean Clear Pads not being used from another canister that I started using a cartridge with instead. I discovered that if I cut the flow tabs off of the end the pad fits inside the FX series Fluval Filters perfectly.
The padding is not real thick. Maybe 3/4" used and 1" if New but they work Very well for polishing. yes they could get dirty and clog.
So here is what I did. I used a pair of sharp, sturdy scissors to cut the tabs off right at the base of the tabs. I've also found that the 1 gallon (5lbs) tubs of NLS fish food are about the same size as the inside fo the inner FX5/6 media trays as well.
They are a nice tight fit.
I used the same idea of the original design of the Red Sea Canister pads to cut out my own flow by holes. I place these pads in the bottom media tray so that they are the last thing that the water goes through and once they get full, which will take a while, the water can still flow around them, keep flow rates ample... But you will start to see less clear water. More micro particulates when these get full and need to be rinse, bleached and dried. So it's best to use 2 or by a few and cut them prior so that you can easily grab another if they deteriorated enough from rinse and squashing. This action breaks the bond in the material which is why it's best to bleach them and then soak in de-chlorinator water and then let dry.
