Dividing a 4ft 60 gallon into 2 2ft 30 gallons.

Hey Gang,

Figured that I share what I did to create two permanent 30 gallon tanks out of this 4ft 60 gallon breeder tank. I have been wanting to accomplish this for some time now.

I went to a local glass shop and had them cut me two pieces of 1/4" thick glass being that none of the hardware stores carry anything over 1/8"...

I had both pieces cut at 17 3/8" x 14 1/2" and asked to have the bottom corners beveled a bit to account for the silicone at the bottom of the tank.









-I drained the tank of all of the water that I could. Soaked up the rest with a ragged a few time and squeezed the water out into a bucket and let the tank dry out for a day or so.

-I then moved all of the substrate to either side of the tank away from the center where the divider would go.

-Used rubbing alcohol pads to clean the surface of the glass where silicone would be applied and wiped with clean paper towel.

-Tapped off the glass on both side of divider as well as the front, back and bottom middle of tank glass so that I could simply peel the tape off once finished and give a nice clean look to the silicone.

-Removed silicone and let dry. This evening will be 72 hours since finished application but I will most likely wait until the weekend to fill and setup the tanks and move fry in...

Now to order some filter boxes from Jehmco!

Probably going to move my Wild Juli Pair on one side and stick Maswa and Eretmodus Goby fry in the other.

EDIT: Placed my order for a Case of Filter Boxes (Round kind), a Case of Hydro #1 Sponge filters, Sheet of 1.5" thick Fine and Med-Fine Filter padding to cut and place over bio filter in the boxes for max bio filter and ease of cleaning from Jehmco being that they are the only ones that have these items plus they are great people to keep in business. They are more of large operation specialty items company to chose. Not like I have a huge operation going on but they sell in bulk at discounts.

Nice work Andrew....out of interest, was there a reason that you wanted to keep the two bodies of water separate, ie not filtering and heating the whole tank as one with a divider with holes in the middle?

That's actually what it was for a while. I had that XP3 canister filter filtering the tank and a 18" x 18" UGF plate for a divider. But some fry would slip through on occasion. I'm just wanting to keep things isolated for worry free care and if any issues arise. Just trying to be precautious mostly.

I'll have two filter boxes on each side as well.

Did I miss something? You said you purchased 2 pieces of glass. Did you use both on this project or is there another in the works ? Oh and by the way "Nice Job" !
