CARING FOR TROPHEUS....
There seems to be some talk in other places online about this so I will offer some advice from my experience.
Stress is not the cause of bloat. Stress is a catalyst for the onset of bloat caused by bacterial infection (Dropsy) and switching foods to quickly or too much protein causing constipation/ compaction (Malawi Bloat).
A few things that you NEED to keep in mind while caring for Tropheus, wild, F1 or later. .
1. The typical main sources of stress for tropheus are Poor Water Quality, Hyper Dominant Aggression, Improper diet (too high of protein regularly) and switching foods to quickly.
2. Meds once a week is a HORRIBLE Idea especially an antibiotic like Metronidazole, albeit a mild one. You can't just give an antibiotic once a week. Just like any antibiotic, they need to be administered at a minimum dosage to kill of the bacteria and at regular intervals daily for a specific and Minimum Duration of days... Otherwise you will inevitably create antibiotic resistant bacteria. PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.
3. Tropheus cannot have too much "rich" protein as they have Long digestive tracts and are not designed to process it like a carnivore or omnivore. All herbivore's have a longer digestive tract to process plant like matter and pull as much nutrients out of is as possible in a slow moving fashion. Fleshy proteins are processed quicker and once all of the nutrients are pulled from it, it will start to compact and decay and THIS is what causes Malawi Bloat.
4. Tropheus can be feed fleshy proteins in small portions once or twice a week with no issues because it's so small of an amount and the fiber surround it helps to keep it moving through the GI tract.
DO NOT FEED TROPHEUS HIGH PROTEIN FLESHY FOODS LIKE BRINE SHRIMP REGULARLY OR THEY WILL PAY THE CONSEQUENCE.
5. Meds are NOT to used a prophylactic course of action. Only things like Epsom Salt, Natural Herbs and Spices in their foods are... These are things that naturally boost the immune system and can strengthen other internal processes. Most manufactured foods these days have tons of Vitamins and Minerals to give plenty of health
I don't know why people are pushing the envelope with tropheus lately. Things have been fine tune for a long time and best practices have been made over the years. Taking chances is not a wise choice but everyone is free to take them. But remember not to ask "why" when you start losing tropheus people.
