TROPHEUS:

Tropheus is a small genus of eight species of cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Annecten, Black, Brichardi, Duboisi, Ikola, Moorii, Mpimbwe and Red. The genus Tropheus is widespread across all regions of lake Tanganyika, from Burundi in the North to Zambia in the South. Males and females are relatively similar as they are monomorphic. All species maternally mouthbrood their eggs and fry and it is this characteristic that provides their latin name. The name Tropheus is derived from the Greek "trophos" which means "to nurture". Most species occur along the coastal fringes of the lake at depths of less than 3 metres. These rocky shores, with numerous rocky outcroppings and boulder formations form a habitat that provides shelter and, due to the shallow depth and the long hours of strong sunlight, heavy algal growth on which the Tropheus feed. The only tropheus species to dwell further out and deeper in the lake is Tropheus Duboisi which in general inhabits deeper regions of the lake down to around 15-20 metres. All species are algal grazers and have underslung mouths adapted to rasping algae and microinvertebrates from submerged rocks

I have been cycling my tank for several weeks with no worries of gh and kh. I will be getting trophs in a few days so I began to test all water parameters. The pH has been above 8 throughout the process however I can't seem to get kh above 7'. I am going to go buy new test today as mine are about 3 years old. Is there a reason for this? In the past I have used Epsom and aquarium salts for gh and kh however I don't seem to be getting the results I've had in the past. So I will preform a tank cleaning algae and such and get new kits. Any other suggestions?

I add calcium chloride I get at the brewery supply store. I tried calcium carbonate but it took forever to dissolve and stayed cloudy. I also put in potassium chloride I buy online. Seems to work well with the neutral water where I live. For each 4 gallons of water I use a tsp each of baking soda and Epsom salts, then a 1/2 tsp each of the calcium and potassium. You'd probably have to adjust depending on what you start with.
